Discovering Gimp

I had the pleasure of watching a youth teacher; Jasmine R.,

use the Internet to research a assignment for the Gimp

Projects. She used youtube.com; they have a large collections of gimp video tutorials. She located the video teaching aid of her choice "Turning a full color photo into pop art". She navigated to google.com, in the image mode, picked a picture of Alicia Keys. The picture was made for the effect, an uncanny choice on Jasmine's part.

 

I watched as she used the layers dialog box and the many options associated

with layers. Duplicate a layer, new layer, layer opacity, merge a layer and layer modes. She also used the tool box, the eraser tool, the paint brush, and the zoom tool. I literally watched, as her skill level grew. She turned the image into a line art masterpiece with the filter tools; she inverted, she gaussian blurred, made excellent use of the threshold tool and then she blended the photo into a finished piece.

 

The final outcome showed, that she had the skills to handle various tasks with Gimp.

Mastering the tools of Gimp:

Gimp is a graphics editor; in the same vein as Photoshop.

The controls differ at some points One of those points

is loading brushes. In Gimp, it is a process, to say the least.

Geneeka with the aid of Angel Fernandes, located and downloaded

3 packages of Gimp brushes for special effects artwork.

The process involved locating and saving the brushes to a remote

area on the server then exporting to a brushes folder in Gimp.

It can take a few moments, but the duo accomplished the task.

This is a level of skill that tells that you know a software,

modifying it on a function level, changing the way the program

operates, it also says the Gneeka can troubleshoot problems,

which is handy because software is known to act up.

If you are onsite understanding how Gimp works

will aid in fixing problems and shortening dead time(people waiting around)

Gimping in the fast lane:

 

Asma Abdulkadir

 

This young lady used her love for sports cars,

as an inspiration, to create a stunning

piece of art. Learning the moves, from a youtube Gimp

video, she changed gears and headed for the fast lane.

Her composition, was made using brush strokes, transformed

to simulate lightning bolts, with a colored glow on a blended

background. A photo of a sports car with the motion blur applied

for zoom effect, blended as if the car was speeding out of the

lightning bolts. She also added text; a term "term to come" in her language;

which means speed or fast. Asma is using colors and blending

layers with skill. I know that the youngsters she teaches

Gimp to will be thrilled by her creative interpretations of

developing a graphic, using this application.

What does Micheal Jackson and Albert Einstein have in common;

both are geniuses. Alex brought home this fact with the help of

Gimp, from instructions via a youtube video tutorial. My only comment

is, this is a great start learning the ins and outs of Gimp.

Using tools you know and learning new tools are very important,

finishing what you start is also helpful.

 

So Alex when you can, please finish this.
