Lesson Plans 2009Pico
Lesson 1 1. Icebreaker and introduction 2. Before! Trap door when they walk in 3. Explain what is Pico (David) , why be excited about Pico (Carlie), explaining it's parts (Nora) 4. Examples of other interesting projects. 5. Teach how to program trap and sensors. 6. Makes their own traps - Braistorm & test help/teach each other Inputs (Sit on a trap, stand on it, open a door, turn on a light) Outputs (make light, make move, make noise)
Lesson 2 1. Continue with trap, and fix problems with sensors 2. Rules - have them think of something themselves. 3. Cars
Lesson 3 1. Go to Pico Page ( http://www.picocricket.com/pdfs/Reaction_Game.pdf ) ( http://www.pienetwork.org/a2z/m/modules/lifter/ ) ( http://www.pienetwork.org/a2z/ ) 2. Find something to build 3. Build the module 4. Improve on the module by adding other things to make it more interesting 5. Explain the parts and tell if it was easy or not
Lesson 4 1. Think of a module that will use most of the parts 2. Build it + add to it to make it more creative 3. Ask how they would teach other children and how they would plan the lessons Scratch
Lesson 1: 1. Icebreaker and introduction 2. Basic scratch introduction "Dancing Sprite" 3. Example 4. Design own Dancing Sprite 5. Share/Teach peers
Notes: Sounds like they have at least some understanding of both projects. Some people need to speak louder. I think they have a complete understanding of Scratch and Pico but they need to work on presenting themselves better and remembering how to certain terms. Questions asked (to them): What did they do? What did they like/dislike? What do you think you can improve on and can you teach it to younger kids?
Lesson 2: 1. More scratch info. (specific tools) Bulid maze (or individual projects) 2. Example 3. Design own maze/ind. project 4. Share/Teach 5. Save file in L2T files
Lesson 3: Scratch w/scratch board - our goal is to teach the new youth teachers scratch using the scratch board. - first we are going to pick a topic that will use the board - The lesson is called "Dancing Cat w/scratchboard Lesson 4: Scratch w/scratchboard...alligator clips -our goal is to build instruments of the youths choice with the alligator clips -pick a instrument -build the instrument, use aluminum foil, plates, alligator clips -this lesson plan is "choose that instrument"
GIMPFirst Lesson Ice Breaker Ball Challenge: This exercise creates a simple, timed challenge for the team to help focus on shared goals, and also encourages people to include other people. The facilitator arranges the group in a circle and asks each person to throw the ball across the circle, first announcing his or her own name, and then announcing the name of the person to whom they are throwing the ball (the first few times, each person throws the ball to someone whose name they already know.) When every person in the group has thrown the ball at least once, it’s time to set the challenge – to pass the ball around all group members as quickly as possible. Time the process, then ask the group to beat that timing. As the challenge progresses, the team will improve their process, for example by standing closer together. And so the group will learn to work as a team. Then we will challenge them to remember the names of the past people and go around until someone messes up.
Toilet Paper Materials - a roll of toilet paper
Objective: Tell things about yourself according to the number of sheets you took from the roll of toilet paper.
1. Pass around the toilet paper roll and let them grab as many pieces as they want 2. Then they have to tell them things according to the number of sheets of toilet paper they picked
Students will design a "L2TT2L" poster including a background image and text. They will then use the threshold tool on another image and see how well they can transform it into black and white. Objective Student will learn to: I. Retrieve images from the Internet II. Use background layer III. Use text/text layer IV. Use threshold V. Resize Images VI. Use Colors and explore the color tools VII. Saving Work Create a JEPG image Agenda
Second Lesson Objective Student will be able to:
Lesson Plan
Third Lesson Objective Students will be able to:
Fourth Lesson Objective Student will be able to:
It will incorporate things from lesson one including layers, getting images from on line, and saving images. HyperscoreFab LabIntroduction:Explain the machines that we work through out the year. Review the safety rules of running this machines. Open up the floor to any question that they may have to ask about any thing that we may do in the fablab.Tell them what fab lab is short for(Fabrication Labortory). First Lesson: 1.Introduction to the lesson. 2.Explain what press fit is and how its used. 3.Explain what we are going to be doing in the class and what we hope for them to get out of the teaching. 4.Have them look the tutorial to see what are the steps they are goint ot have to take to get a final product. 5.Have them open up the drawing page so that they can begin working on what they have to make.
objective: Our objective for the first lesson was to have each of our student to produce a house that was press fit and that fit together sort of like lego pieces. They were going to follow a step by step tutorial that was going to give them a final product.
Second Lesson1.Introduction to the lesson. 2.Explain teh steps they can use to have a final product. 3.Give them an example to what they have to build. 4.Inform them that we are there to help them if tey come acrossany problems. Objective: our objective is to have our students build a project that is machanical and can possibly run later if they are added to other modules, such as pico and scratch. We will first show two examples. They then will go on the computer and start making their own machanical design that hopefully will be a big success or we have them work in groups of 2 or 3 and they can come up with a project in a group.(Food For Thought) just and idea that they can maybe try if they feel like working alone is problem. Then if the group rules on doing groups, they can maybe do a short 5 min presentation among the group just to use time wisely.
How To Get Started
First we are going to bring a board into the class so that the students can write down at least 20 ideas of some mechanical things that can be built using the fablab(laser cutter). The ideas written on the board are for them to use if they dont already have an idea as of what they want to build in the class. Next we are going to get them where they need to be by having them open up the page that they are going to be working to design their project, then if they need any kind of scrap paper to make a drawing of what they are tring to produce then they will be provided with that by one of the returning youth teachers working in the area teaching that class. There are going to be examples of what they can make, they can decide to make the same thing but they have to change it in some kind of way. We want them to be able to come up with their own ideas so that when they have to make their own ideas for their classes they are going to have to teach in the summer session, then they will already have an idea of what they have to come up with. This will help them for their summer sessions as well as session that are going to be coming around in the future.
Third LessonThis lesson we are going to test how good they work in a group with on another. Our goal for this class is to have them make a layout of their own dream houses in a 3D form. This is going to test if they can actually work together to come up with a final product. This is going to help them for when they start to teach in the summer when they have to come up with an idea or project to teach at the centers that they are sent to because you may never know if one of them are put in to the position to have to make up the teaching plans so this can help them out. Objectiveour objective is to have them work as peers and make up a layout of a dream house and to also see if they can come up with something they actually agree on and not just one person making up everything they both have to put tgheir heads together to make this work out the way they or we have imagined it to work. Steps to get started1.) The returning youth teachers are going to peer them up. 2.) Give them atleast 2 sheets of scarp paper for them to draw their ideas on. 3.) Next have them split up the pieces that need to be made to complete the job. 4.) Have them get on their own computher and begin to develope each piece carefully. 5.) Once they have their house layout made, have them present to the group their idea of a dream house.
Requirments of layout1.) Must have: (Max.2 rooms/Min.1room) a)bathroom b)kitchen c)living room d)bedrooms (max.4/min.2) e)door ways (must have an entrance to every room, no jumping over walls to get to that room)
2.) By the objects in that room any one who looks at your house should be able to tell which room it is. You may use labels if you choose to but we would like for your objects to speak for themselves.
Every thing that you make like tables, chairs, ect. must be press fit, no glue or nails will be used unless you are going to put the pieces on a flat board as a finished project. You must remember if you need help ask dont just sit around, but this is to test how much you can help each other so try to use the teachers in that class a little less ask your partner for help first, if neither of you can figure it out then we are here to help you.
Back-up Plans
1.)Introduce the vinyl cutter and basically describe what it can do and give the students a chance to play around with the images they may find on the internet and give them a chance to cut out the image they have found. If there is still time left over then we can show the how the vinly cutter and the laser cutter programs can actually be put together to make one project. We can also explain to them and show how that you are able to intertwine the modules to create a project.
2.)We can also try some of the ideas that we have put out on the table from last year, we could ask and see who feels comfortable tecahing and give them a chance to teach the class. This is a way to see if their teaching skills are developed or is there still some things that we as the returning youth tecaher have to teach. This can also be a way to help us to develope our teaching skills and what we need to improve on. This is all possible by helping them come up with an idea and to take that idea and to make it into a lesson plan that they are able to teach. I find that this is moree helpful then to actually be told what to do. They can get a feel of what it means to be a youth teacher.
3.)*Maybe* we can have them think about some issue that they can tackle dealing with our community. They can write down on a board some of the ideas that they can build in the fablab to help make their project more interesting. This may not be as fun as we may think it is but its just to give them an idea of what they are going to have to do to get a successful project in the summer.
4.)Another plan that we can think about turning into a lesson is that we can have them make a smart house with in the group that they are put into, since they have been introduced to pressfit and mechanical projects maybe they can bring those into one to make a house that they have all put their ideas into it. We can talk to them a little bit about what we did when we had to come up with this same exact project and give them a chance to come up with some ideas.
Lesson Plans 5 This week we want to make things a little more fun for the kids so we are going to have them build thing that are fun for them like they are going to have to build thing that have to do with violence. It can be any thing this is just to see where they may stand when it come to violence in the community. Seeing that many of the youth today have faced many problems in community from being the victum of violence and seeing it happening or a friend or family member being involved in that kind of stuff. This is so that they can get a feel for some of the thing that we are going to be looking for in the summer for the group projects,
