Pico Activity Plan: Kinetic Sculptures

Design and Build a Spinning Sculpture That Dances as It Twists

1: Stuff you need BEFORE the lesson:

·        1 Pico Box Per 2 Students

·        Make Sure every Computer has Pico up and running

·        Account for all the pieces in the Pico Kits…making sure they are complete and full

·

2. Opening Concepts:

·        Explain the project you will be working on with the kids

·        Ask the kids what are sensors that they can know about and relate it all to how Pico can also use those senses that they are familiar with.

3. Focus of the Lesson:

·        The focus of the lesson is build an advance dancing sculpture that moves depending on the sensors used by the students…from touch, light, sounds, etc.

4. Teaching:

·        Begin by having the kids build their dancing portion of the sculpture with the art supplies in the kits (if needed there is a bin of art supplies for extra building)

·        As people begin to finish their sculpture let them begin by connecting a motor to their piece and test out how it moves

·        Once they begin the motor testing get them to start using the various sensors of their choice (so everyone can have a little freedom in their art work) and guide them into programming the sensor to their dancing sculpture.

5. Wrap-up:

Begin with the students showing off their work to one another in the class.

After recap with the class on the various sensors Pico have and how they work

Get kids to clean up their areas and when needed to, to disassemble their art works once the time comes to.
